CHOA AGM 2017 & Facilities and Upgrading Technical Lunch

Thursday, September 21, 2017
11:00am - 1:00 pm

Presentation Title: Canadian Crude Quality – Handle With Care

With increasing levels of oil sands crude production being transported to new markets, there is a need to better understand the quality implications for safe transport and processing.  The rail disaster in Lake Mégantic Quebec brought attention to the consequences of handling issues.  Understanding the flammability of diluted bitumen is an example of a question needing an answer.  The answer comes from fundamental research and testing.

The Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association represents 75 member companies from production, transportation, refining and servicing the Canadian heavy oil industry, conducting collaborative research into matters related to crude quality.  This presentation will provide an overview of active projects which contribute to a better understanding of crude quality, with an emphasis on Canadian heavy oil.

Speaker Biography:

Gerald Bruce has extensive experience in the oil industry with a diversified background linking oil sands production, bitumen upgrading, oil refining and technology development to the Alberta oilsands market.

Early career work with Petro-Canada provided an appreciation of bitumen upgrading mega-projects, hands-on refinery process engineering, head office project and technology development and a thorough knowledge of the “downstream” business.

Gerald moved to Jacobs Consultancy in Calgary as a senior consultant advising government and industry on the challenges and opportunities of transforming bitumen into value added products, leading to refinery conversion projects targeted to process Alberta oil sands derived crude oils.

Invited to work for MEG Energy Corp, a heavy oil producer, to manage the development of a bitumen conversion technology to transform SAGD bitumen into refinery feedstock.  The manufactured crude oil product meets pipeline specifications without the need for transport diluent, The HI-Q process is now patented.

Gerald is the past president and currently treasurer of the Canadian Crude Quality Technical Association (CCQTA), strategic advisor to the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (past president), and an oil sands processing consultant to government and industry.

Gerald has a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University Waterloo.
